Face it, if you are concentrating on the conversation then you aren't concentrating on the driving. Just because you can stay connected doesn't mean it's a good idea. Focus. Enjoy what you drive.

Road safety should be there to take advantages of the tips and ideas for Americans and Canadians alike. For those gb's that attended the Chicago Auto Show, this Canadian gb grandma hopes that each of you came away with something that will make you drive safer. We all need to be our part.

Even with hands free phones people are distracted by the conversations, so how is newer technology going to make it safer to drive and talk on a phone?????

maybe let the car drive, then the "driver" can text all he or she wants.

Think about ALL of the people you know. How many shouldn't even be trusted to tune a radio station while driving, let alone using a cell phone?

Even hands free doesn't assure safer driving; I can attest to that.

Anything can be a distraction but that said I think technology if done right could be helpful in driving while limiting distractions. If the interface to the smart phone could be completely voice activated and controlled then I think it has that possibility. The voice controls could be for things like getting directions or a map, getting info about hazards ahead like an accident and more. That would help the driver be safer. Then as far as music if that can also be voice controlled then it will be safer than radios in current cars. And as far as calls voice control will limit distractions from the road and maybe the tech could limit the length of calls so that you can impart info like I am driving and will call when I am parked and safe. I think technology has a big role to play and in the future with driverless cars even more so...

I have the strangest feeling of Deja vu...
The display should be in front of the driver, and only show info that pertains to DRIVING. No radio stations, caller ID's, etc.
You want to talk to someone, STOP and call them. You want to drive, then DRIVE ONLY.

Good answer "Cellsite". Everything thats a distraction to the driver is of concern now days. Moving stuff to the center console where you have to look down and away ain't safe. Moving stuff to the stearing wheel was an improvement.

Safety studies have shown that hands free cell phone use is just as dangerous as hand held phone use. Just go 100% cell phone free when driving.

Now if they just outlaw illegal guns while driving the streets will be much safer, but if they are illegal in the first place how will they out law them?

agree cellsite, instead of outlawing all sorts of thing while driving, why not just make it a felony if you participate in any distracting activities while you cause an accident.

All this safety technology being built into new cars and it still comes down to one thing: the person driving the car.

LOL, @DeserTBoB :)
Seems to me that the distraction while driving is just moving from the phone itself to the dang electronic screens in these new cars. Time was, all you had to do is glance at the speedometer once in a while. Any other problems showed up as a bright idiot light. If you think futzing with an analog car radio was distracting, these new screens will be 100 times more distracting, yet the auto industry is promoting them as a "safety" measure. Yeah, right.

Once we get drivers to quit texting or talking on their cell phones while driving, maybe we can get people to stop driving while holding their dogs in their laps.

Politicians need to quit making laws that only some people care about! Police have better things to do, but education about the dangers should allow the personally responsible drivers to make good decisions.

You can legislate restrictions on cell phone use and have enforcement of the law as a primary offense, all we have to do is insist our legislators do it.

Ever since they made it illegal to use cell phones here in California, it seems pretty obvious to me that even MORE people have them stuck to the side of their faces as they drive (s l o o o o w l y) in the fast lane.
Can't legislate stupid out of the people.

I say let the cell phone voice mail take the call while driving; the other party should know that you lead a busy life and can't be interrupted by some phone call at any time.

What we need to do is reinstate drivers education in school. I remember when they ran the film about auto accidents with teenagers driving while drunk, or distracted and the results really hit home with the kids watching.

just another comment about the people commenting here to disable the cell phone when the car starts is a dumb idea. I want my cell phone to work if there is an emergency. Also some use it for gps.

After we have to pay for the new hands-free devices, they will be seen as a distraction, so we can't use them either.
Still, do you need to be talking with others every waking moment?
